It is important to classify assets in order to provide them adequate protection as per the policy. Too much protection is as dangerous as too little protection. There has to be a balance maintained between asset protection and company finances. If stringent controls are applied on all the assets, it will be a terrible waste of company resources similarly if you apply very loose controls on all assets, your critical assets will be left unprotected.

If given a choice will you opt for gold or bronze? Similarly, malicious people are looking for gold in your organization and that's what you need to protect most. It's no point protecting bronze and leaving gold unprotected.
